HIGHEST OF THE HIGH: REB SHLOMO’S 15th YAHRZEIT
For Reb Shlomo’s fifteenth yahrzeit, The Carlebach Shul hosted a commemoration that would have made our rebbe very proud. Clearly displayed was the love, honor and devotion all of his followers and talmidim have for Reb Shlomo these many years after he left us.
Our commemoration began with our annual “Yahrzeit” Shabbaton. On Friday, the “Carlebach” Kabbalat Shabbat service, adopted by so many synagogues throughout the world, was led by our magnificent Ba’al Tefillah Yehuda Green, who also led Mussaf services on Shabbat morning. In addition to Rabbi Citron, Shabbat speakers included: Judith Leventhal, Rabbi Tzvi Hersch Weinreb, Nechama Silver, Rebbetzin Sarah Marmorstein, Rabbi Joel Greenblatt, Maureen Kushner, Reb Reuven, Naomi and Zwe Padeh, Sheilah Schlosser, and Rabbi Avraham Newman.
On motzaei Shabbat, hundreds of guests gathered at WSIS from all over the tri-state area to hear an array of performers offer a musical tribute to the man whose music has spawned a generation of Jewish composers and singers. Organized by Yaakov Dov Miller, it was the largest yahrzeit concert we’ve ever held. The parade of talent opened with Chaim Kiss leading Havdalah, followed by Pey Dalid, Eitan Katz, Elli Kranzler, Yisroel Williger, Yehuda Green and Soulfarm’s C. Lanzbom amd Noah Solomon. With the dance floor too small for such a large audience, audience members used every available inch of space in the room. Some even danced in the lobby during the four hour long extravaganza.
On Sunday morning, the weekly Carlebach Yeshiva, led by Reb Zwe Padeh continued our commemoration with a special video of Reb Shlomo teaching. That evening, Reb Shlomo’s daughter, Neshama, performed with her band and shared personal memories of her father. Neshama spoke about an exciting project in which she’s involved to help rebuild homes in New Orleans.
Our commemoration continued with a siyum on Monday, November 2nd (Reb Shlomo’s actual yahrzeit). Reb Naftali concluded Tractate Baba Kama and talked about the connection between loving people, inspiring people to Yiddishkeit and the relation between Jewish legal ethics and Jewish spirituality. The evening also included a musical performance by Lev Leventer, Stephanie Kurtzman and Jeremy Gaisin. Later that night, a gathering was hosted by a group of students of Reb Shlomo, led by Rabbi Itzik Aisenstadt.
The yahrzeit commemoration concluded on Tuesday morning with Shacharit minyan, led by our very own Avraham Dubin.
